UD x Shalmali Kholgade
‘The Jungle Outfit’, an upcycled co-ord set designed by Urban Darzi and worn by Shalmali Kholgade for her performance at Holifest 2022 in Dallas, Texas. Shalmali is an Indian playback singer known widely for her hit songs like Balam Pichkari and Daru Desi. She was styled by Saumya Thakur, a fashion stylist and Editor-In-Chief of H&H Magazine.
The ensemble was created using textile scraps and a discarded pant-shirt set. We used a water soluble stabiliser to make an applique patchwork with the textile scraps that we collected from local boutiques, we were able to create an entirely new outfit from existing materials and upcycle them into a funky, unorthodox co-ord set.
More often than not, previously worn or discarded items of clothing are destined for landfills but with upcycling, already existing material is the basis for creating something completely new and exciting. Quoting Shalmali herself “About this spunky coord I’m wearing here, IT’S UPCYCLED, we need more conscientious brands like this. Also, we could look to upcycling our own clothes as customers and help reduce the impact fast fashion has on the environment”
